2019-20 Superintendent’s Message August 8, 2019 Welcome to the 2019-20 school year in the Lucia Mar Unified School District. We are excited to continue our tradition of high quality and well-rounded education in our eighteen schools. Teachers and staff are eager to receive students on the first day of school on Thursday, August 15. Annual Notification to Parents Information provided in this booklet was developed for parents/guardians of students enrolled in our schools as a reference guide of rights and responsibilities. Thank you for taking time to read this important information and for sharing it with your child. If you have any questions regarding this information, please feel free to contact our District Office or your child’s school. Our District and Schools Lucia Mar’s borders begin in Shell Beach and extend through to the southern end of San Luis Obispo County in Nipomo. We are proud to have eleven elementary schools, three middle schools, and four high schools, as well as a robust Inde- pendent Study program and a strong Adult Education School. As the county’s largest school district, Lucia Mar Unified serves approximately 10,300 students and is governed by a seven-member Board of Education who are dedicated to supporting strong academic achievement and a well-balanced model of student support that incorporates social-emotional health and learning. All actions and services fall under one of four over-arching District Goals: #1 Student Achievement #2 School Climate #3 Organizational Excellence #4 Future-Ready Education Under Goal Area #1, Mathematics instruction is an area of emphasis in the coming school year. The Board of Education approved a plan to provide dedicated professional development in the elementary grades to improve academic results in this key area. Thanks to the passage of Measure I (November 2016), Lucia Mar is in the middle of significant construction upgrades. As we open school on August 15, we will have students in brand-new classrooms at Arroyo Grande High, Grover Beach Elementary, Nipomo Elementary, Harloe Elementary, Oceano Elementary, and Mesa Middle School. Additionally, we have recently wrapped up significant modernization projects at many sites. Finally, we are a listening organization. We welcome any feedback from all stakeholder groups.
