Faculty Spotlight: Liisa Pine Schoonmaker Liisa Pine Schoonmaker started welding in 1991, while working with mechanical artists in San Francisco. She quickly became enamored with its more technical aspects and switched focus to take classes in mechanical engineering and develop her welding skills. With continued professional development and participation on the Executive Board of the American Welding Society, she developed a career with a wide range of experience in both manufacturing and construction and earned certification as aWelding Inspector for structural steel. She has worked on municipal projects for San Francisco and Oakland, run a machine shop for a tech research firm, spent time on an Unlimited Speed Record jet car team, was the lead welder for a mobile funhouse and a giant waterslide for the Discovery Channel, and has taught thousands of people to weld in MIG, TIG, Stick, Oxyfuel and Flux Cored Arc Welding. In 2018, she was honored to be inducted to the Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame for work in non-traditional careers.
