SafeSitter – Babysitting Skills 13-16 yrs. SafeSitter is a training class for individuals who are interested in becoming childcare providers. Hands-on instruction includes infant care, planning age appropriate activities and how to manage discipline issues. Participants are taught how to prevent and respond to emergencies, with an emphasis on first aid skills, as well as how to recognize child abuse and handle inappropriate adult behavior. This program is designed for mature-minded individuals who are serious about developing his/her childcare skills and abilities. Participants must be 13-16 years old and will receive a certification card upon completion of the Safesitter training. Bring a sack lunch to class. Students will be introduced to basic engineering and programming concepts, as well as motors and sensors. We use the following platforms for Jr. students in class: Lego Wedo Education, Cubelets by Modular Robotics, and Dash with Tickle ios. Students learn through playing, creating, and building various machines in addition to creating programs, and utilizing motors, light sensors, distance sensors, power, inverse blocks, loops, conditions, and more! Our curriculum supports NGSS standards through STEM learning and is taught by instructors following ISTE teaching standards. NO CLASS: 2/19, 2/20, 4/8, 4/9. Do you get nervous when speaking to an audience? If so, this is the perfect class for you. Come learn the basics of public speaking (posture, voice projection, vocal variety, eye contact, etc.) including how to write a variety of speeches – all in a safe, encouraging environment. Have fun and boost your confidence. We play games, like impromptu speaking – speaking with no preparation – about fun and relevant topics. We also go over particular themes: Listening as a skill, persuading with power, building other people up as leaders – even life skills: Positive self-talk, Stress management. Picture Book Calling all kids who want to write a children’s picture book! Come explore and discover the structure of the children’s picture book, development of characters, setting, story problems, and resolutions. We will also take you through pacing, pagination, layout, story boarding, and other components of creating a kid’s picture book as you write your own story. Final product will be a rough and ready draft of a children’s picture book. Illustrating their story will also be encouraged. Sprinkled throughout the day will be generous portions of theater, improvisation and other group games. NO CLASS: 2/19, 4/8.
