Teacher Assistant Program High School students entering grades 9-12: Make this summer matter by volunteering as an Academic or Summer Enrichment School Teaching Assistant for Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Education and Recreation. You’ll be assigned to work with a teacher in the classroom on course planning and help maintain a safe and clean learning environment for students, and prepare materials and supplies in advance for class projects/activities. Fee: $50 COMMITMENT REQUIREMENT: Participants must be available for the full duration of the program (June 15th-July 10th). Proof of completion of volunteer service hours will be distributed to all participants at the conclusion of the program. Class Descriptions GRADES K–1 BLOSSOM HILL AND ARGONAUT These are the class descriptions for 2020 Summer School Los Gatos and Saratoga elementary sites. This summer we will be at Blossom Hill and Argonaut. Principals: Megan Meyer (Blossom Hill) and Kathleen Erikson (Argonaut) Incoming Kindergarten This class is open to all children who will be entering Kindergarten in the fall only. The children will be given a fun- filled four weeks to maintain and further develop their school skills. They will work on a variety of activities that cover art and crafts, dance, music, stories, pre-literacy, pre-math skills, motor development, social skills, and hands-on science. Students will become acquainted with the environment, curriculum, routines, and expectations of Kindergarten. Incoming First Grade This class is open to all children who will be entering first grade in the fall only. Student-centered lessons will be offered around science, art, music, literature, PE, games, stories and more. Students will participate in both whole group and small group instruction. The goal is to enrich the academic education received during the school year, while promoting a love for learning. Help your student maintain their educational enthusiasm and continuity by enrolling in this class. GRADES 2-3 Amazing Science! Are you a science fan? Do you like to do experiments? Join the adventure and learn about scientific investigation, magnetism, and chemical reactions in this lively and stimulating class. This science class includes daily, hands-on, experiments along with predicting and observing outcomes of basic science concepts. Learn about chemical reactions in the most explosive way! If you like biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and research then this is the class for you! Math Fun! Have fun and build your mathematical confidence! This is a hands-on, center orientated, math game class that will get your mind racing! Use basic math skills and problem solving to improve mathematical reasoning. Use your knowledge to find the answers to math puzzles, brainteasers, and to solve problems. Have fun working individually and in small groups on math challenges and math games to give your brain a work out! Cooking For Kids This class equips students with basic skills to become more independent and successful in the kitchen. Have fun and learn some new healthy recipes to share with your family and friends. Even the pickiest of eaters will usually try food they prepare themselves. Work on your math and reading skills while measuring and following a recipe. At the end of the session each student will take home a recipe booklet containing all of the recipes they’ve made in class. (Warning! This class may not be ideal for children with food allergies or dietary restrictions.) Writer’s Workshop! Young authors wanted! Everyone has important stories to tell. In this class, students will have fun developing their best ideas while still addressing writing standards. Let’s inspire one another to create exciting new tales! Students who love to write and students who are afraid to pick up a pencil will love this popular class. All students, new and returning, are welcome. Make It Sell It – Mini Economy Are you ready to become an entrepreneur? Want to create and run your own business? By learning to make change, selling and promoting your product, and learning how to manage a budget you can become a real small business owner! Play money games and have fun improving your money skills. Students in this class will create and run their own businesses, “selling” to other students on site. Art For Everyone Are you ready to get creative? Students will be encouraged to stretch their imagination creating art every day. Students will learn that art is found in many forms. They will use a variety of materials such as paint, clay, watercolors, oil pastels, chalk and tempera to create extraordinary art. Easy to learn and fun to do, kids will be excited to see just how creative their little hands can be! ARGONAUT ONLY Tech Adventures and More! Using technology, expand your creativity and fine-tune your problem solving skills, all while collaborating with classmates to create a variety of digital presentations. Explore with Nearpod, Peardeck, Kahoot!, and more. In this class students will use technology to create content not just be passive users.
