Chess Grades 6-8 Only Chess is a hot game! If you know a little bit about chess or nothing about chess, this is the class for you. Learn the game and meet new friends and increase your brainpower. The excitement never stops when you play chess. Get ready to level up on your chess team! Digital Art Grades 6-8 Only Students will be introduced to various means of integrating art with technology. Topics will include concept sketching, layout techniques for print, color theory and typography, and identity/ brand development. In addition, students will be introduced to the digital environment for digital arts; learning digital vocabulary and file formats primarily using Adobe Illustrator. This is a fun art class and a great introduction to Digital Arts. It’s Alive Biology Grades 4-5 Only (Hands-on Biology and Earth Science) Come and join us for an exploration of our living Earth as we get up close and personal with living organisms such as bacteria, insects, amphibians and reptiles. We’ll use microscopes, conduct experiments, and have hands-on experiences with cow’s eye dissections, bacteria experiments, worm races and more in this lively, discovery-learning class. Includes all supplies. Movie Critic Grades 6-8 Only Do you enjoy watching movies? Learn to critique movies like a movie critic. Watch and enjoy movies from the past and present and learn to observe, compare and contrast them with a critical eye. Movies will be shown on a large screen with popcorn, just like your favorite movie theater! Robotics Grades 4-5 and 6-8 Students develop a strong understanding of the world of robots and programming. This robotics class is designed to be student-driven using project-based learning techniques, which builds upon skills using a combination of step-by-step projects and challenges. Students begin by learning basic robotic construction concepts followed by an introduction to programming. For the finale students will compete with their robot in a Robotic challenge. Survivor Grades 4-5 Only Lightning strikes, dead car batteries and losing your map — emergencies can happen at any time! Bringing STEM to the great outdoors, through utility of tools to working through challenging situations, learners use ingenuity to gain crucial skills such as knot tying, water purification and compass navigation. Students gather their senses, put their new skills to the test and conquer every challenge Mother Nature throws their way! Games Galore! Grades 4-5 and 6-8 From ancient games to contemporary favorites, board games teach strategy, cooperation, and decision-making. In “Games Galore”, students will learn the rules and history of the games, but most of the class time will be spent playing and learning the strategy behind them. The skills learned in this class will make Family Game Night a fun tradition in your home! Inventor’s Studio Grades 4-5 Only You could possibly create the next great invention! Each year a new class of bright minds come together to learn about the inventing process and create amazing inventions that may have never been thought of before! You get to create, explore and build prototypes then share them with others at our end of class show! You will deconstruct everyday appliances to get ideas about how things are made, and scavenge their parts to reuse in your prototypes. You will also learn about other inventions that came from everyday inspirations. Come to class with an everyday problem that does not yet have a solution, and we’ll try to create an invention to solve your dilemma! Bring your enthusiasm and creativity! Kitchen Survival Grades 4-5 Only A hands-on class for those who like to cook and eat! Have fun and learn about nutrition and new recipes to share with your family and friends. Learn to cook a variety of foods from eggs to sliders. Pencil Heads – Creative Writing Grades 4-5 Only All kids have a story to tell, and we want to help them write it! We will help kids unleash their imaginations onto the blank page— and discover the fun that can come from writing! The course will encourage creative thinking, mindfulness, and build self-esteem in writing and literacy. Because every Pencil Head’s voice is unique, this is the class for the next great author of the world! REDWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL ONLY 60 Seconds or Less: Grades 4-5 Only Hands-on Physics Work in challenge groups to observe, test, and attempt to break the “laws” of physics by designing and building everything from rolling marbles over tape to explaining energy conservation, to understanding air pressure by making cups fly. You will learn about trajectory, displacement, force and motion, and vacuums. This is a lively, discovery/learning class. Includes all supplies.
