Principles of evolution, evolutionaryhistory, andpopulationgenetics. Intended for biological sciences majors. Prerequisite: MTH 55 (completed with a grade of "C" or higher) or equivalent and , BIOL 6 (completed with a grade of "C" or higher) or , CHEM1A (completedwith a grade of "C" or higher) Strongly Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 1A These are hybrid courses with two required on-campus meetings. The first time is to pick up lab specimens from campus with a date TBD. Prepare freezer space for non-toxic specimens before pickup. The second time is to collect data on campus and perform lab work. Most course work is asynchronous, but 4 lab meetings over the semester will be held synchronously over Zoom to conduct lab work and dissections. BIOL 10 INTRO TO THE SCIENCE OF BIOL 4.0 Units Basic principles of biology, dealing with the nature of living things, and the nature of scientific investigation and its bioethical impact in our modern world. Designed for non- majors in biology or the biomedical sciences. Lectures will be presented synchronously via ConferZoom with recordings made available. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly recommended. Labs will alternate between online activities and hands on learning. Online labs will be hosted via McGraw Hill Virtual Labs and are part of the required online book purchase. Hands on labs will occur on campus in room 2106, contingent on health department guidelines, at 50% capacity of lab rooms. If health guidelines do not allow in person meetings, lab kits will need to be picked up at campus three times during the course of the semester. In this scenario, specific dates and times for lab kit distribution will be provided at the start of the term by the instructor. Laboratory emphasis on developing various laboratory skills, using the metric system, collecting data, graphing, interpreting data, and preparing for and taking laboratory exams. Designed to prepare the necessary concepts and laboratory skills and experience that are needed to succeed in more advanced courses in biology. Geared towards Allied Health students. Strongly recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 1A, MTH 53 These distance education sections are hybrid sections taught online and in-person for some lab meetings. Recorded lectures will either be posted or taught lectures will be provided synchronously using ConferZoom with recordings made available. The section will require students to use online textbooks/laboratory websites/programs with a desktop/laptop computer. Tablets/smartphones are not fully compatible with the course software. Students are expected to be available for synchronous exams during lecture and lab times. Hands on labs will occur on-campus on some weeks in room 2104, contingent on health department guidelines, at 50% capacity of lab rooms alternating with online virtual labs. If conditions do not permit in person labs due to health department guidelines, the instructor will use ConferZoom for synchronous lab meetings with online virtual labs during the posted lab times instead of the campusmeetings. Students will be required to pick up lab kits on campus during posted lab or lecture times if the labs are taught online. The instructor will email students before the start of the class with specific dates.
