8 • Parks, Open Space & Cultural Services AQUATIC PROGRAMS Junior Lifeguard Programs MORNING SESSIONS The Pool Junior Lifeguard program introduces youth to the fun and rewarding job of protecting and saving lives at the pool. Each 3-week session offers a variety of activities including swimming, lifeguard skills, running, calisthenics, team-building games, special guests, and many special activity days. Prerequisite: Swim 25 yards freestyle without stopping, submerge and swim underwater for 10 feet, and tread water for one minute. SIMPKINS FAMILY SWIM CENTER - AGES 7-13 AFTERNOON SESSIONS The Afternoon Pool Junior Lifeguard program introduces youth to the fun and rewarding job of protecting and saving lives at the pool. Each 3-week session offers a variety of activities including swimming, lifeguard skills, running, calisthenics, team-building games, special guests, and special activity days. Prerequisite: Swim 25 yards freestyle without stopping, submerge and swim underwater for 10 feet, and tread water for one minute. SIMPKINS FAMILY SWIM CENTER - AGES 7-13 Lifeguard Training Courses - Offered Summer 2022 Ages 15+ can learn the skills needed to prevent and respond to emergencies, and earn the certification to be employed as a lifeguard in a pool environment. Little Guard Programs MORNING SESSIONS Each day participants will enjoy many of the same activities as the older Junior Guards, however, the staff- to-child ratio will be lower (1:8) and swim workouts will occur either in the Warm-water Pool or the Splash- down Pool (both heated to 88 degrees to keep the Little Guards warm!). Little Guards will also participate in special activity days with the older group, including beach days, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboard day. On the day the older group goes to Golfland, Little Guards will have an exclusive pool party and take a tour of the Central Fire House across the street! Prerequisite: Must meet “Guppy” swim level skills (see swim level descriptions on page 6) in order to participate in the program.
