Ethnographic case studies highlight these similarities and differences, and introduce students to how anthropologists do their work, employ professional anthropological research ethics and apply their perspectives and skills to understand humans around the globe. ANTR 12 MAGIC/RELIGION/WITCHCRAFT/HEAL 3.0 Units Cross-cultural perspectives on spirituality, religious practice, myth, ancestor beliefs, witchcraft and the variety of religious rituals and practitioners found in the cultures of the world. Examination of the cosmologies of different cultures through the anthropological perspective. Emphasis is placed on how knowledge of the religious practices and beliefs of others can help us to understand the multicultural world in which we live. Comparison of the ways in which diverse cultures confront the large and fundamental questions of existence: those dealing with the meaning life, birth and death, and with the relationship of humans to each other and to their universe. Recommended Course Preparation: Eligibility for ENG 1A/1AEX ANTR 13 INTRO TO FORENSIC ANTHROPOLOGY 3.0 Units Introductory course in the application of physical anthropology to the medico-legal process with an emphasis on the identification of human skeletal remains. Includes basic human osteology and odontology , assessment of age at time of death, sex, ancestry, trauma analysis, pathology, and general physical characteristics including height and weight based upon minimal skeletal remains. Estimation of time since death, crime scene analysis, animal scavenging, and identification procedures. Recommended Course Preparation: Eligibility for ENG 1A APPRENTICESHIP IRON WORKERS APIW 53 WELDING TECHNOLOGY 3.0 Units Mastery of manipulative skills used in welding technology. Emphasis on safe use and applications of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and flux cored arc welding (FCAW) to AISC and AWS codes and standards. Knowledge and safe use of welding power sources, welding equipment, oxy-fuel cutting systems and their applications. Electrode identification and usage in typical construction and structural applications. Skills necessary to pass a standard AWS welding certification test. Prerequisite: Student is a registered State indentured apprentice and a member of Northern California Shop Ironworkers Local 790. APIW 57 STRUCTURAL III 3.0 Units Procedure for layout and fitting of structural steel members including trusses, left hand beams and columns with an emphasis on Pipe. Discussion of pipe size and schedule and their use on blueprints. Usage of transit for shop Pipe layout applications. Identification and fastening procedures for bolts used for shop assembly of structural steel. Use of templates as a tool to fabricate steel structural components. Application of geometry and mathematics in the layout of components and templates. Construction of transitions using triangulation. Prerequisite: Student is a registered State indentured apprentice and a member of Northern California Shop Ironworkers Local 790. APIW 59 METAL STAIRS LAYOUT AND FABRIC 3.0 Units The principals and procedures relating to layout and fabrication of metal stairs. Emphasis on application of blueprint information to completed component. Use of proper tools and techniques to ensure quality layout, fit-up and fabrication. And requirements for finished stair construction including intermediate platforms and curved stringers. Understanding of right hand and left hand components as they relate to stair fabrication. Use mathematical calculations to determine the ratio of rise and run as they relate to stair stringer layout and fabrication. Prerequisite: Student is a registered State indentured apprentice and a member of Northern California Shop Ironworkers Local 790. APIW 62 BLUEPRINT READING II 3.0 Units Principles of reading and interpreting structural steel engineering design blueprints used to build steel frame buildings. Advanced reading and interpretation of structural steel fabrication blueprints used in industry. Emphasis of advanced drawings as a communication tool for complex structures. Advanced applications of shop floor usage of blueprints in structural fabrication. Prerequisite: Student is a registered State indentured apprentice and a member of Northern California Shop Ironworkers Local 790. APIW 94 OCCUPATIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE 1.0 Units College supervised on-the-job training. Apprenticeship work experience in an occupation related to student’s apprenticeship program. Cooperative effort of the work supervisor, student, Joint Apprenticeship Training Council (JATC) or Program Sponsor, and instructor to achieve workbased learning objectives. Student must be enrolled in an apprenticeship program. Each Unit of Credit requires 75 hours of paid work experience. Students can earn 1 to 8 units per semester for a maximum of 16 units of Cooperative Work Experience, which includes General Work Experience and Occupational Work Experience/Internship. APPRENTICESHIP MARINE TECH APMT 51 BOATWORKS 101 YACHT ELECTRICAL 4.0 Units This course is an introduction to yacht electrical systems, including the theory of electricity, routine service, and maintenance. Enrollment Limitation: Admission to this course is limited to apprentices registered with the State of California Department of Apprenticeship Standards. Students must first be accepted into a registered Boatworks 101 apprenticeship. APMT 53 BOATWORKS101 CRAFTSMANSHIP LAB 0.5 Units This course is a lab-only class that will allow the student to showcase and be evaluated on their craftsmanship skills. Enrollment Limitation: Admission to this course is limited to apprentices registered with the State of California Department of Apprenticeship Standards.
