For the most current class information, scan the QR code for the searchable online class schedule at www.chabotcollege.edu/courses SOCI 4 MARRIAGE & FAMILY RELATIONS 3 Units Students in this course will explore the family institution, including different family forms, historical and recent changes in the family, the cultural and economic forces shaping changes in the family, and challenges faced by today’s families. Strongly Recommended: SOCI 1 SOCI 6 INTRODUCTION TO GENDER 3 Units This course offers students a critical examination of the way society shapes our ideas of gender and sexuality, including definitions of masculinity and femininity. Students will learn how our society creates gender difference, a gender binary, and gender inequality. A focus will be on how the concept of gender changes as it intersect with race/ethnicity, class, and sexuality and the impact of socio-economic and political change on gender expectations. SOCI 7 WOMEN OF COLOR IN THE US 3 Units Critical examination of the historical and socio-cultural experiences of African American, Latinx/a, Asian American, Native American, Arab American, and Pacific Islander women through a feminist perspective. The course will study gender and how it intersects with race, ethnicity, nationality, class, sexuality, religion, and other systems of difference and power. (No credit if ES 7 has been completed). SPANISH Learn a new language that can help broaden your global cultural knowledge, and for traveling, fulfill requirements to transfer to a 4-year college and increase career opportunities. SPA 1A BEGINNING SPANISH 5 Units In this course, you will be introduced to the Spanish-speaking cultures of the world featuring the study and practice of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Strongly Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 1 SPA 1B ELEMENTARY SPANISH I 5 Units In this course, you will further study the Spanish-speaking cultures of the world featuring the study and practice of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) of Spanish. Prerequisite: SPA 1A (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) or , SPA 1A2 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) SPA 2A INTERMEDIATE SPANISH 4 Units In this course, you will further study the Spanish-speaking cultures of the world through a review of first-year linguistic content, read works of modern authors, and practice conversation and composition. Prerequisite: SPA 1B (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) or , SPA 1B2 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) SPA 2B ADVANCED SPANISH 4 Units In this course, you will continue the study of the Spanish-speaking cultures of the world through a review advanced linguistic content, read works of Hispanic authors, and put emphasis on conversation and composition. Prerequisite: SPA 2A (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) SPA 50A SPA CONVERSATION & CULTURE I 3 Units Development of a basic understanding of spoken Spanish through pronunciation, vocabulary, and applied grammar, and an introduction to the everyday culture of Spanish-speaking people. THEATER ARTS Theater Arts at Chabot is dedicated to serving theater students, the campus community and the community at large. In addition to courses in all the many areas of theater; Acting, Writing, Directing, Technical Theater, Voice, Movement, History and more, we offer a wide range of theater productions. Our mainstage theater productions give students the opportunity to use all the skills they are learning in other courses and apply them under the guidance of a faculty director. While study in Theater Arts at Chabot College advance a student’s abilities as a theater artist, they also contribute to the growth of the whole person. Social consciousness, connection to self, personal responsibility, collaboration, creativity, problem solving under stress, critical thinking, are just of a few of the things participation in theater helps a student develop. Though many of our students go on to further study in theater as well as becoming professionals in the field, all of our students carry the lessons and memories they learned from their theater experiences into whatever they do next. THTR 1 INTRODUCTION TO ACTING 3 Units This course prepares a student to apply basic acting theory to performance and develops the skills of interpretation of drama through acting. Special attention is paid to skills for performance: memorization, stage movement, vocal production, and interpretation of text. THTR 3 IMPROVISATION FOR THE THEATER 3 Units Introduction to the techniques and theories of improvisation and its various uses in theater. Development of the ability to think quickly, develop characters, work in an ensemble and create spontaneously through various exercises. Recommended for non-theater as well as theater majors. THTR 4A INTRODUCTION TO ACTING ON CAMERA 3 Units Learn approaches for preparing, rehearsing and performing on camera that can be used for commercials, film and television work. Students will prepare and perform scenes and monologues that will be shot on camera in studio and on-location settings. May not receive credit if THTR 4 has been completed. Strongly Recommended: THTR 1 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher), THTR 17 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) THTR 4B ADVANCED ACTING ON CAMERA 3 Units This course builds on the skills developed in THTR 4A, deepening student’s understanding of how to perform on camera with authenticity and believability. Scenes will be more complex and demanding than those at the previous level. Prerequisite: THTR 4A (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) or THTR 4 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher Strongly Recommended: THTR 1 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) and THTR 2A (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) or THTR 2 THTR 10 INTRODUCTION TO THEATER ARTS 3 Units Focuses on the relationship of theater to various cultures throughout history, and on the contributions of significant individual artists. Introduces students to elements of the production process including playwriting, acting, directing, design, and criticism. Students will also survey different periods, styles and genres of theater through play reading, discussion, films, and viewing and critiquing live theater, including required attendance at theater productions.
