http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 3 Class Location & Information HOW TO REGISTER Students interested in attending classes at East Side Adult Education Program must register for Student Orientation. Classes are open to all adults 18 years old and over. HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA AND GED Students interested in one of the above programs may enroll online on our website, call and/or come to our office or to make a Student Orientation appointment. After orientation, students need to make a counseling appointment. Students are placed in high school diploma classes based on the transcripts evaluation. Students who are currently enrolled in one of our district high schools may register for classes to recover credit to satisfy high school diploma requirements. High school students must meet with their counselor and obtain permission from their parent/guardian prior to being accepted at adult education. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) and CITIZENSHIP Please visit the adult school you wish to attend. You will register for New Student Orientation which includes an English language assessment. Our ESL program operates on an open enrollment basis, students may enroll throughout the semester. To register, scan the QR code and complete the application during open enrollment periods (see pages 9-13 for class information). CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION Students interested in enrolling in CTE courses may either call or come to our office to enroll. No placement test is necessary. East Side Adult Education Program is a public education program for adults funded by State and Federal funds. Our program offers free classes for adults 18 and older. Students may obtain a high school diploma, a high school equivalency diploma (GED/HiSET), prepare for a career by enrolling in one of our Career Technical Education courses, learn to speak English, and learn how to become a U.S. citizen.
4 East Side Adult Education - Fall 2025 Adult Basic Education The Adult Basic Education Program (ABE) provides classes, aligned with the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), in Mathematics, Language Arts (language, speaking, listening, and writing) and Reading. The integration of the CCR standards in the ABE program is intended to provide students with the knowledge and foundational skills for students to transition to the adult secondary program. This program is also designed for students who are native speakers of English and immigrant students who possess advanced communication skills in English and need to further develop their literacy, numeracy skills, and communication skills. All works, or projects, are based on two core concepts: The Design Cycle which is the basis of the creative process: (1) research, (2) plan, (3) create and (4) evaluate. The Elements of Art--line, shape, form, texture, color, space, and value--which are the basic components in an art piece. Students will learn basic instruction and skills building in painting, drawing, and design using traditional media such as acrylic paints, charcoal, watercolor, and colored pencils, as well as 21st Century technology. This class is open to members of the community. There is a $20 fee for community members only. http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 5 East Side Adult Education (ESAE) awards high school diplomas to students who meet Board of Education and WASC accreditation requirements. Our program offers a standards-based curriculum tailored to adult learners, with in-person, hybrid, independent study, and distance learning options. Students learn through self-paced and small-group instruction, earning five credits per completed course. Credits from accredited secondary or foreign schools may be accepted. ESAE students can also take courses at local community colleges and access tutoring, counseling, school psychology, and transition specialist services. Students must meet all state and local requirements for graduation. Residency for high school graduation requires that a student must be enrolled and pass 10 units of credit at the East Side Adult Education program. 6 East Side Adult Education - Fall 2025 GED and High School Equivalency GED/HISET EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA GED DISTANCE LEARNING It is required that students have a good computer or laptop, with an operable camera and audio system. Efficiency on emails and the internet is a must! You must be self-motivated and enthusiastic about your studies, as this is mainly Independent work. It is highly recommended that you study 10-12 hours/week to achieve your goal in a timely fashion. A minimum of 6 hours/week is required to maintain your place in Distance Learning! Your instructor will oversee your lessons and enhance your learning plan with assignments. All students will have access to abundant resources, for all subjects, at all times. Conferencing with your Instructor (Your Coach) is necessary to discuss your “Readiness” for testing. COMMUNICATION is part of the requirement. Tutoring will be available by appointment and suggested, when necessary. Skill Building classes are also available. Pre and Post tests will be provided, along with “Practice Tests” and “Official Test” enrollment. Getting Started: Students will be required to take a Placement Test at Independence Adult Center, 625 Educational Park Drive, San Jose, CA 95133. http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 9 English as a Second Language ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE East Side Adult Education offers more than 50 English as a Second Language classes accommodating 6 different language proficiency levels, from Pre-literary to Advanced Low. Classes are offered in the mornings, afternoons and evenings, at different locations (see details on pages 10 and 11). After the students are registered, they will be invited (via email and text) to take a placement test. Students are placed in classes according to their placement test results and space availability. Students must test at an English language proficiency level of low/high intermediate or advanced Low. These classes are for applicants who wish to become a citizen, prepare for the interview, and pass the citizenship test. 14 East Side Adult Education - Fall 2025 Career Education WORK READINESS This course introduces students to the working world, and provides the knowledge and insight necessary to compete in today’s challenging job market. This relevant and timely course helps students investigate careers as they apply to personal interests and abilities, develop skills and job search documents needed to enter the workforce, explore the rights of workers and traits of effective employees, and address the importance of professionalism and responsibility as careers change and evolve. This course includes lessons in which students create a self-assessment profile, and a resume that can be used in their educational or career portfolio. MEDICAL CAREERS MEDICAL ASSISTANT FUNDAMENTALS In the Medical Assistant Fundamentals course, students learn the five steps of the nursing process, basic anatomy and physiology, how to interact with patients and team members, problem-solving techniques, stress management, and verbal and nonverbal communication techniques. The online resources for the class are user-friendly, even for first-timers. The lessons will familiarize you with medical terms and forms commonly used in a medical office. Students taking this course will greatly enhance their employment value. All students are encouraged to enroll in the fundamentals class at the same time as one of the medical courses listed below. http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 15 CAREER EDUCATION MEDICAL DISTANCE LEARNING Instructor o ce hours vary for each course HEALTH SCIENCE & MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY The Health Science and Medical Technology course provides a comprehensive overview of the healthcare industry, covering essential topics such as diagnostic, therapeutic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development pathways. Students will explore the evolution of healthcare, current trends, and the impact of technology on healthcare delivery. The course emphasizes the importance of professionalism, ethics, patient care, and effective communication within diverse healthcare settings. Additionally, students will gain practical skills in medical terminology, safety standards, first aid, and the use of medical equipment, preparing them for various careers in the health science field. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY A & B This two-semester course introduces students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, combining forms, and singular and plural forms, plus medical abbreviations and acronyms. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to healthcare settings, medical procedures, pharmacology, human anatomy and physiology, and pathology. The knowledge and skills gained in this course will provide students entering the healthcare field with a deeper understanding of the application of the language of health and medicine. Students are introduced to these skills through direct instruction, interactive tasks, and practice assignments. NURSING ASSISTANT This two-semester course prepares students to provide and assist with all aspects of activities of daily living and medical care for the adult patient in hospital, long-term care, and home settings. Through direct instruction, interactive skills demonstrations, and practice assignments, students are taught the basics of nurse assisting, including interpersonal skills, medical terminology, care procedures, legal and ethical responsibilities, safe and efficient work, gerontology, nutrition, emergency skills, and employability skills. Successfully completing this course can help you determine whether a career as a Nursing Assistant is the right path for you. PHARMACY TECHNICIAN This two-semester course prepares students who are interested in pursuing employment as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT), and covers the skills needed for the pharmacy technician field. Through direct instruction, interactive skills demonstrations, and practice assignments, students learn the basics of pharmacy assisting, including various pharmacy calculations and measurements, pharmacy law, pharmacology, medical terminology and abbreviations, medicinal drugs, sterile techniques, USP 795 and 797 standards, maintenance of inventory, patient record systems, data processing automation in the pharmacy, and employability skills. 16 East Side Adult Education - Fall 2025 Career Education ACCOUNTING 1A/1B/1C This instructional program prepares individuals to perform any combination of the following tasks: apply the accounting cycle for both a service and merchandising business through closing the books for a sole proprietorship, partnership, and corporation; select and use appropriate computer hardware and software to develop, process, and maintain accounting records and create reports; create and maintain subsidiary ledgers; prepare, analyze, and interpret financial statements; apply procedures for asset acquisition and disposition and analyze and calculate depreciation methods; create budgets, design flexible budgets, and make capital budgeting decisions. In the QuickBooks class the students are using the Accountant version. Students enrolled in this course are learning relevant computing skills found in most offices today. Intuit® QuickBooks, the industry leader in managerial accounting software for small business, provides an easy-tounderstand platform for students to grasp accounting concepts while honing skills in the most prevalent bookkeeping application in small business today. Students can validate their QuickBooks knowledge at the end of the semester by becoming an Intuit QuickBooks Certified User (QBCU). FINANCIAL LITERACY Financial Literacy explores real world topics include balancing a checkbook; savings and investing; understanding state and federal taxes; earning an income; banking and financial services; understanding loans and borrowing money, including predatory lending and payday loans; understanding interest, credit card debt, and online commerce plus questions you bring to the class on these topics.
