2 • Parks, Open Space & Cultural Services As summer ends, we reflect on good times spent under the sun with family and friends, outdoors in our beautiful parks and public spaces. These past few months we celebrated as a community with movies in the parks, the 4th of July Free Swim event at Simpkins Swim Center, free events every day during the month of July to highlight “July as Parks & Recreation Month” and then concluding with another amazing collaboration on the Free Family Fun Day event, hosted this year by our friends at the City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services. As we head into the fall season, we are looking forward to working with Parks staff and the community on updating our strategic plan, continuing our awesome programs and renting out our amazing facilities. We will be continuing our efforts for increased awareness and education offerings surrounding stewardship, youth programs and opportunities in our open spaces. We are also very excited about the new Live Oak Library Annex located at the Simpkins Family Swim and Live Oak Community Center, funded primarily by Santa Cruz Public Libraries Measure S funds. The best is yet to come with this project as we move forward together on coordinating the programming and planning for use of the amazing new outdoor plaza area and community rooms. Please be patient with the construction occurring in the area when visiting the Swim Center or Parks offices. Additionally, County Parks is proud to partner with the Pajaro Valley Unified School District as we assist them with the administration of their grant for Extended Learning Opportunity Programs. Together we will provide free and subsidized programming before and after school at our current After School Childcare Enrichment sites. Lastly, we continue to work with the Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriff’s Association and our non-profit partner County Park Friends, raising funds and completing phased updates to Willowbrook County Park in Honor of Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller. This will include construction of a new memorial seating area, flagpole, updated landscaping, a new playground and play surfacing. There are still opportunities for you to be a part of this legacy project by visiting coutnyparkfriends.org/willowbrook.html County Parks continues to offer high quality recreation programs for all ages, including youth sports, active adult fitness courses, and amazing reservable facilities, all maintained by our amazing Parks Maintenance staff and County Park Volunteers – thank you! All my best, Rebecca Hurley FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT Rebecca Hurley

www.scparks.com • 17 artist OF THE YEAR Annie Morhauser Annie Morhauser has been named 2022 Artist of the Year by the Santa Cruz County Arts Commission. The Artist of the Year award is presented to local artists for outstanding achievement in the discipline of performing, visual, or literary arts who have also made a substantial contribution to the cultural enrichment of Santa Cruz County. A free Profile Performance will be held on Saturday, October 22 at Cabrillo College." Check the Parks Department website in late-summer 2022 for more information: www.scparks.com. Annie is the founder of Annieglass, a highly successful line of glass tableware sold through the finest luxury stores and resorts in the nation. Handcrafting her glassware in Santa Cruz County since 1983, Annie developed her company throughout the years to become one of the largest and most successful American glass studios. By combining skills as a designer, artisan, and businesswoman, she has been able to build a highly regarded brand as well as a successful company. Annie’s work is in the collections of such noted museums as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. Annieglass can be purchased in the finest stores, hotels and resorts in the country, and is collected by chefs, celebrities, bridal couples and many loyal local customers. Annie has accomplished something rare: crossing over into the commercial world while tenaciously retaining her fine art approach. Her downtown Santa Cruz store was one of the first to reopen after the 1989 earthquake. Next year, in 2023, she will celebrate 40 years of creating sculptural glassware with her skilled team of artisans. The Annieglass studio, originally 400 square feet in the Old Sash Mill, is now a manufacturing facility of more than 16,000 square feet in Watsonville. Twice each year a new collection is introduced. Annieglass has invigorated the ancient craft of glassmaking with new technology and original design. In 2017, Annie launched The Craftbar, hosting a variety of workshops in arts and crafts, which functions as a community beacon. The Annieglass retail store is connected to the factory and is run by her daughter, Ava Reinhold; it offers all of the Annieglass collections as well the work by other well-known and local craft artists. Annie serves as an advisor and trustee on the board of her alma mater, the California College of the Arts, where she was a scholarship student. Over 400 non-profits annually receive cash and in-kind donations, including Jacob's Heart, Girls Inc., Digital Nest, Planned Parenthood of Mar Monte, Salud Para La Gente, Watsonville Film Festival, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the Museum of Art and History. Over 40 scholarships have been awarded to students in need. The Santa Cruz community has been very supportive and generous to Annieglass, Annie and her family. Her son, Taylor Reinhold, recently directed the Sea Walls Santa Cruz murals and follows in the family footsteps of art and community service. ARTS PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES
