Students will develop their ability to understand the language of medicine through word building, analysis of terms, pronunciation, and spelling. The course includes basic anatomy, pathology and diagnostic procedures as well as the language used in the medical professions. This course is a prerequisite for the Medical Interpreter course. PREREQUISITES: Employment level competency in written and oral communication in English.COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS: Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency through tests, quizzes and projects, and complete at least 80% of the course hours. This class is articulated with Mission College. Students can earn credits upon completion. The curriculum is based on the National Standards for Health Care Interpreting Training Programs.This course is designed to train bilingual and bicultural students to develop the awareness, knowledge and skills necessary for effective oral language interpretation in health care settings. This course is taught in English. Students will learn: Roles and responsibilities of a health care interpreter, basic knowledge of common medical conditions, treatments and procedures, insight in language and cultural nuances for specific communities, application of interpreting skills in English and native language of service. Book used: Healthcare Interpreting In Small Bites ISBN 1-4269-3122-2 Admission Requirements: The ability to speak fluently in his/her language of service and commitment to the entire training program. Interested students must have completed both Medical Terminology classes (beginning and advanced).Requirement for Certificate of Completion: Must complete the course with a grade of “C” or higher. In addition to Medical Terminology, she has also taught courses in Safety & Infection Control and End of Life Care.
