LGS Recreation Guide • Winter/Spring 2020

Coding & Robotics – Junior 8 – 11 yrs. Throughout this 15-week program, we’ll teach the kids several fundamental programming constructs. They will also see them in action as they are coding up on Scratch. After learning and playing around with several programming concepts, each kid will sit down and think about what they want to build – a story or a game and implement it! We’ll also be introducing them to hardware, how they can be interfaced with software – kids will interface their very own game with hardware! In addition, kids will be introduced to LEGO Robotics through Scratch projects. Continuing batch is specifically for kids who have attended our previous course – to pick up from where they left off. NO CLASS: 2/18, 4/7. The Sr. Robotics program teaches LabViews GUI and EV3 hardware, Tickle ios, Cubelets, VEX Robotics, Quirkbot, mBot, and more. This course takes students on an adventure of technology and creativity. Students go through a course in understanding computer science in which lessons are made to balance technology and programming with hands- on educational learning, encouraged ‘self-thinking’, and ‘real world’ problem-solving. Class lessons start with the information necessary to program robotics by applying logic and programming fundamentals within various GUI platforms, conditional statements, if; then/else, wait, loops, data operations, etc, and end in the following ‘real world’ team challenges for students to solve: SUMO, obstacle avoidance, maze programming, line follow, and more... Our curriculum supports NGSS standards through STEM learning and is taught by instructors following ISTE teaching standards. NO CLASS: 2/19, 2/20, 4/8, 4/9. Throughout this 15-week program, we’ll focus on teaching kids how to break down a big problem statement into several logical steps and then execute each of those steps in the correct sequence to solve problems. Several unplugged exercises and puzzles will be included in the course curriculum to enhance their logical and analytical thinking. We’ll also let the kids create a story / game and narrate it in their own way – but via coding. A major chunk of the curriculum time will be devoted towards getting them familiar with visual programming languages, designed for the younger learners. We’ll also be introducing the kids to foundational concepts about electric current, how circuits work, basics of robotics, and help them program their first robot!
