Chabot College • Summer and Fall 2024 Class Schedule 72 510.723.6600 • www.chabotcollege.edu/welcome24 FALL 2023 COURSES ETHNIC STUDIES Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary and unique scholarly field that centralizes and redefines the experiences of people of color in the United States, using an intersectional analysis. Born out of the people power movements of various communities of color in the 1960s and the efforts of the third world Liberation Front, Ethnic Studies emphasizes on the praxis of resistance and liberation in order to eliminate all forms of injustice and oppression, especially along race and ethnicity. Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary program with a focus on the history, literature and cultures of African-Americans, Asian/ Pacific Islander-Americans, Chicano-Latinos, Native Americans and Middle Eastern Americans. ES 1 INTRODUCTION TO ETHNIC STUDIES 3 Units An introduction to Ethnic Studies, an interdisciplinary and comparative study of race and ethnicity in the United States. The course will examine core frameworks of Ethnic Studies disciplines: African American/Black Studies; American Indian/Native American Studies; Chicana/o/x/e and Latina/o/x/e Studies, and Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies. ES 4 INTRODUCTION TO LATINX STUDIES 3 Units A pan-Latina/o, comparative, and interdisciplinary approach to major themes and issues related to the Latinx community in the U.S., including: race and racism, indigenous culture, colonialism, war, genocide, migration, transnationalism, citizenship, identity, language, gender, family, labor, neoliberalism, education, expression, and resistance. A critical examination of modern Latin American history and indigenous and African cultures connected to the Latinx diaspora, including Chicana/o, Mexican, Central American, South American, and Caribbean-American communities in the U.S. ES 5 RACE/GENDER IN POP CULTURE 3 Units A critical examination of representations of people of color in popular culture, from historically significant to contemporary examples. Using an intersectional lens of race, ethnicity, gender, class, and sexuality, students will analyze representations from mainstream films, independent cultural productions, music, visual art, and social media, and how characters and communities of color are portrayed and interpret these images as consumers of media. ES 6 INTRO TO PACIFIC ISLANDS AND OCEANIA STUDIES 3 Units An introduction to the studies of the Pacific Islands and Oceania and its Polynesian, Micronesian, and Melanesian communities. ES 42 ASIAN AMERICAN HISTORY: 18TH CEN TO 1945 3 Units An exploration of Asian American history from the 18th century to WWII. A critical and comparative analysis of the impacts of race, racialization, white supremacy, orientalism, colonialism, imperialism, war, social inequity, and migration on the first wave of immigrants from China, Japan, Korea, India and the Philippines. (May not receive credit if History 42 has been completed successfully.) FILM The Film and Animation program teaches students to apply the principles of storytelling, cinematography, lighting, editing and visual effects. We offer a supportive and creative environment for filmmaking animation and motion graphics. Students learn an array of technical skills using Adobe’s Creative Suite—Illustrator, Photoshop, PremierePro, and AfterEffects. FILM 12 SCREENWRITING & VISUAL STORY 3 Units Write your first short film with well crafted characters, a strong story, and prepared in the proper script format. Explore style and film concepts by storyboarding and pre-visualizing your completed script. Strongly Recommended: FILM 14 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) FILM 14 INTRODUCTION TO CINEMATIC ARTS 3 Units Introduces the analysis of film and animation aesthetics. Examines form and content, aesthetics and meaning, and history and culture of film and animation. Topics include modes of production, narrative and non-narrative forms, visual design, editing, sound, genre, ideology and critical analysis. Strongly Recommended: Eligibility for English 1A. FILM 15 INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL FILMMAKING 3 Units Introduction to digital filmmaking as an artistic medium through lectures, screenings, demonstrations, and hands-on practicum. Critical analysis and appreciation of production elements and development of skills in pre-production planning, digital cinematography, direction of actors, sound design, art direction, and post-production. Strongly Recommended: FILM 14 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) FILM 16 DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING 3 Units Introduction to documentary filmmaking and current techniques of digital documentary including sound, video and mixed media documentary. Story basics, research, structure, objective/subjective approach, audio recording, shooting setups, interviewing, and rough-cut editing. Strongly Recommended: FILM 15 FIRE TECHNOLOGY Firefighting can be one of the most adventurous and rewarding professions in public service. Chabot’s Fire Technology Program offers both certifications and degrees in Fire Technology and Fire Prevention Inspector. Chabot’s program is based on the Uniform Fire Technology curriculum, and is one of the longest running in the state of California. Successful completion of the program opens opportunities to work in Firefighting, Fire Investigating, Forestry Fire Fighting, Prevention Specialist, and many more. FT 1 PRINCIPLES OF EMERGENCY SERVICE 3 Units This course introduces students to the philosophy and history of fire protection as well as to career opportunities in fire protection and related fields. This course is intended for students majoring in Fire Technology and Fire Prevention Inspector, or anyone interested in fire protection. (May not receive credit if Fire Tech 50 has been completed.) Strongly Recommended: ENGL 1A FT 2 PRINCIPLES OF FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES SAFETY 3 Units This course introduces the basic principles and history related to the national firefighter life safety initiatives, focusing on the need for cultural and behavioral changes throughout the emergency services. (MAY not receive credit if Fire Tech 52 has been completed.) Strongly Recommended: FT 1 or concurrent enrollment, or, FT 50 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) FT 3 FIRE BEHAVIOR AND COMBUSTION 3 Units This course explores the theories and fundamentals of how and why fires start, spread, and are controlled. This course is intended for students majoring in Fire Technology and Fire Prevention Inspector, anyone interested in fire science. (May not receive credit if Fire Tech 53 has been completed.)
