For the most current class information, scan the QR code for the searchable online class schedule at www.chabotcollege.edu/courses PARALEGAL STUDIES The Paralegal Studies Program offers a 24 academic-unit certificate, intended to prepare students for employment as a paralegal in various legal sectors. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of the paralegal profession to enhance the ability to reason, understand and apply correct principles of law by teaching analytical and critical thinking skills. The program is taught by attorneys and paralegals who have practical experience in the field and satisfies all educational requirements required by California law. As such, you will gain the legal knowledge and skills to land a paralegal job in any state. PLGL 30 INTRODUCTION TO PARALEGAL STUDIES 3 Units This course will introduce students to the responsibilities and duties of a paralegal. It will provide an overview of the paralegal profession, including the paralegal’s role in the delivery of legal services. Strongly Recommended: ADMJ 50 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) PLGL 31 LEGAL WRITING AND RESEARCH 3 Units This course is designed to familiarize students with the fundamentals of legal research and writing. Students will learn how to locate, analyze and cite to federal and state cases, statutes, constitutions, and secondary sources. Instruction is given on utilizing both print materials and online resources. Students will prepare case briefs that demonstrate legal reasoning, proper punctuation, grammar and clarity of expression. Strongly Recommended: ADMJ 50 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) PLGL 32 LITIGATION AND CIVIL PROCEDURE 3 Units This course provides an introduction to the litigation process and the role of the paralegal. It will include the process and procedures related to litigation, including the specific duties of a paralegal in the pretrial and trial process. Strongly Recommended: ADMJ 50 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) PLGL 33 COMP APPLICATION & E-DISCOVERY 3 Units This course introduces the use of technology by paralegals in the legal profession. Students will become familiar with hardware and software used in law offices and will explore the latest versions of common programs like Microsoft® Word Excel®, and PowerPoint®, as well as specialized legal applications. Students will be instructed on the ethical considerations of technology in the legal profession. Advisory: All students must have basic computer skills including being proficient with email, the Internet and a word processing program. PLGL 35 ADVANCED LEGAL WRITING & RESEARCH 3 Units This course is designed to build upon the skills developed in Legal Writing and Research. This course will provide a more in-depth, advanced understanding of legal writing, research, proper citation format, and preparation of legal documents. Prerequisite: PLGL 31 (completed with a grade of “P” or higher) PHILOSOPHY Explore the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence through the works of philosophers, art, ethics and politics. PHIL 50 INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY 3 Units Introductory course in philosophy. Students will think critically and systematically about fundamental questions about knowledge, values, and reality that include the following and more: What do I know? What is justice? Does God exist? Do I have free will? What is the nature of the mind and self? Eligibility for: ENGL 1A or ENGL 1 PHIL 55 SYMBOLIC LOGIC 3 Units This course is an introduction to symbolic logic, i.e., the formal study of good and bad reasoning. NOTE: This course is required for nearly all philosophy majors and is excellent preparation for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). PHIL 60 INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY: ETHICS 3 Units This is an introductory course in ethics. To study ethics is to ask questions like: What is justice? Are there universal, absolute, or objective moral rules? Is human nature inherently good or evil? This course examines several historically important yet still prominent theoretical approaches to ethics, including Kant’s deontology, Mill’ utilitarianism, and Aristotle’s virtue ethics. These theories will be applied to contemporary moral problems. Strongly Recommended: Eligibility for ENGL 1 PHIL 70 SOCIAL & POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY 3 Units This social and political philosophy class explores and critically analyzes fundamental questions related to society politics, and ethics. Key questions include: What makes a government legitimate? Is there an ideal size and form of government? Political ideologies like liberalism, conservatism, and socialism will be explored and applied to contemporary issues including: free speech, privacy, and welfare. This class traces the history of social and political ideas from Plato, Aristotle, and Confucius, to Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Marx. PHOTOGRAPHY We will provide a rich and thorough grounding in the skills and aesthetics of photography to allow our students to succeed in a radically shifting field of photography. The mission of the Photography Department at Chabot College is to provide the finest of instruction in the use of traditional and contemporary photographic techniques. PHOT 1A DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY I 3 Units Introduction to the processes, principles, and tools of digital photography. Students will use a digital camera (DSLR, mirrorless, point & shoot or smartphone) to process images from capture to print. May not receive credit if PHOT 50 has been completed successfully. PHOT 1B DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY II 3 Units Digital Photography II is an intermediate digital photography course that is a continuation of Introduction to Digital Photography. Students will practice techniques that build on those learned in PHOT 1A for image exposure, capture, processing and editing while mastering the basic principles and concepts of digital photography. Prerequisite: PHOT 1A or , PHOT 50 PHOT 2A B & W DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY 3 Units Introduction to the processes, principles, and tools of black and white darkroom photography. Students will use 35mm film cameras for the exploration and refinement of gelatin silver developing and printing techniques. May not receive credit if PHOT 60 has been completed successfully.
