ENGLISH COURSE SELECTION First Semester English Composition Classes ENGLISH 1 4 units • Transferable • Letter Grade Only • Required for AAT/AA/AS Degrees English 1 is a transferable, college-level English course. Students develop advanced reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Transfer to most 4-year colleges/universities also requires a second English class (Engl 4A or 7A). Course and Student Expectations • Expect to spend time in and out of class: • Reading and analyzing full-length books • Synthesizing ideas from multiple sources as you write an essay • Conducting research, with the support of the instructor Students who choose English 1 • Have solid experience reading books and writing academic essays (from high school or college classes) • Have effective strategies for annotating a text and separating out main points from details • Are aware of how to quote and cite texts • Are comfortable reading 50-75 pages per week or feel ready for the challenge • Are comfortable writing essays of 1500 words (5-7 pages, double-spaced) or feel ready for the challenge English 1 is open to all students in their very first semester For students who want to work toward personal goals as readers and writers and/ or who want to feel more prepared when taking English 1, they may enroll in English 1 with a noncredit support class, English 215. English 215 is TUITION FREE. Some students can also take one of these college-preparatory classes before taking English 1: ENGLISH 201A/201B Non-Credit • Non-Transferable TUITION FREE • Pass/No Pass Not Required for AAT/AA/AS Degrees Students who choose English 201A/B • Prefer learning step by step at a slower pace • Had limited experience with academic reading and essay writing in high school • Want a short-term course (each 9 weeks) • Prefer a course that builds English vocabulary and comprehension. ENGLISH 202 Non-Credit • Non-Transferable TUITION FREE • Pass/No Pass Not Required for AAT/AA/AS Degrees Students who choose English 202 • Are motivated to advance quickly • Want to refresh academic reading and writing skills typically taught in high school • Want in-class, hands on practice with citing sources, reading for main points, and writing longer papers ENGLISH 210 Non-Credit • Non-Transferable TUITION FREE • Pass/No Pass Not Required for AAT/AA/AS Degrees Students who choose English 210 • Want a short-term English Jam to prepare for transferlevel English 1 • Want to refresh academic reading and writing skills typically taught in high school • Can be taken in the summer or in one-semester with a short-term English 1
