The program includes courses such as Clinical Dental Hygiene, Dental Radiology, General and Oral Pathology, Expanded Functions for the Dental Hygienist, Educational Theories in Dental Hygiene, and Community Dental Health. Successful completion of the two year program qualifies you to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam and the regional board exams for licensure as a Registered Dental Hygienist. DHYG 52A PERIODONTICS 2 Units Normal periodontium and the deviations from health, with emphasis on the hygienist’s responsibility in examination, data collection and recognition of disease. Dental Hygiene therapy for periodontal disease prevention, active case management and maintenance programs. Contributing factors to disease process and case management. Decision-making for patient referral to the periodontal specialist. Prerequisite: Dental Hygiene 51 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher). DHYG 54 PHARMACOLOGY 2 Units Sources, dosages, therapeutic action, and side effects of drugs used in dentistry and dental hygiene. Includes legal and ethical aspects of drug usage. Corequisite: DHYG 57. DHYG 56A COMMUNITY DENTAL HEALTH I 1 Unit Study of individual and community oral health problems, relative to personal, family, and public health needs. Strongly recommended: COMM 1, or COMM 10, or COMM 30. Corequisite: Dental Hygiene 80A. DHYG 57 EXPANDED FUNCTIONS FOR DH 2 Units Dental hygiene advanced clinical functions including clinical practice in administration of local anesthetics, topical anesthetic agents, nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia and soft tissue curettage. Corequisite: Dental Hygiene 54 and 81A. DHYG 60 DENTAL ANATOMY AND MORPHOLOGY 1.5 Units Development and anatomical structures of the head and neck, oral cavity and dentition including: tooth anatomy, eruption patterns, tooth numbering systems, anomalies, and occlusion. Prerequisite: Admission into the Dental Hygiene Program Corequisite: DHYG 60S , DHYG 69A and , DHYG 71A DHYG 60S DENTAL ANATOMY AND MORPHOLOGY 0.5 Units Supplemental instruction on the development and anatomical structures of the head and neck, oral cavity and dentition. Corequisite: DHYG 60 DHYG 61 HEAD AND NECK ANATOMY 2 Units Anatomy of the head, neck and oral cavity, including anatomical nomenclature. Emphasis on structure and function of the oral cavity with a focus on normal anatomy and their structures. Corequisite: DHYG 69A and , DHYG 71A DHYG 61S HEAD AND NECK ANAT IND STUDY 0.5 Units Supplemental instruction on the anatomy of the head and neck, with emphasis on normal structures. Corequisite: DHYG 61 DHYG 69A ORAL HEALTH CARE EDUCATION 2 Units Educational techniques and technical skills used to assist individuals and groups in becoming integrally involved in their dental/oral health care. Information and application of information related to oral health care, oral health promotion and disease prevention. Corequisite: Current enrollment in the Dental Hygiene Program. DHYG 71A PRE-CLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE 4 Units Laboratory and clinical experiences in patient assessment, dental hygiene care planning, goal setting and implementation of instrumentation techniques for providing prevention oriented dental care and non-surgical periodontal therapy. Emphasis on post-treatment evaluation. Application of theory to the treatment of clinical patients. Corequisite: Dental Hygiene 60, 69A and 71S DHYG 71S PRE-CLIN DENTAL HYG IND STUDY 1 Unit Supplemental instruction in the use of dental hygiene instruments. Emphasis on instrumentation techniques including the use of fulcrum options, modified pen grasp, direct and indirect vision. Corequisite DHYG 71A DHYG 74A DENTAL RADIOGRAPHY I 3 Units Introduction to principles of radiography, radiation safety, operation of x-ray equipment, infection control procedures and hazardous waste maintenance. Practice in placement and technique for diagnostic images. Prerequisite: current enrollment in the Dental Hygiene program. DHYG 80A PATIENT MANAGEMENT 1 Unit Dental Hygiene management for the pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient. Course will focus on student awareness of each case type and discussion on characteristics in specific life stages. Prerequisite: DHYG 71B Corequisite: DHYG 56A and DHYG 81A DHYG 81A CLINICAL PRACTICE I 5 Units Continuation of clinical experience in performing dental hygiene therapy with emphasis on patient type categories including: Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric and Special Needs. Focus on patient treatment of periodontal disease within the clinical setting, including education in prevention and control of dental disease and emergency procedures. Prerequisite: DHYG 69B and DHYG 71B Corequisite: DHYG 56A and DHYG 57 and DHYG 80A and DHYG 83. DHYG 82A CLINICAL EXPERIENCE SEMINAR I 1 Unit Discussion and analysis of case-based clinical situations. Case studies addressing client care, protocol and advanced clinical techniques. Exploration of and education in cultural and linguistic competence. Corequisite: DHYG 80A. DIGITAL MEDIA The Graphic Design & Digital Media program teaches students to apply the principles of layout, composition, typography, and image manipulation to become professionals in the industry. We offer a supportive and creative environment for visual art, graphic design, and motion graphics. Students learn an array of technical skills using Adobe’s Creative Suite—Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, PremierePro, and AfterEffects. In our web program, students also learn to work with HTML and CSS. DIGM 1 INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL ART 3 Units Introduction to fundamental concepts, practices, and theories of digital art production. Topics include integration of traditional design, color, and compositional principles with contemporary digital tools. DIGM 2 INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DESIGN 3 Units Introduction to the essential visual elements of graphic design. Exploration of the principles, concepts, and protocols used for effective visual communication.
