Through lectures, demos and assignments students are exposed to and practice digital illustration skills for design, editorial, and animation. Strongly Recommended: ART 2A (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) DIGM 5 TYPOGRAPHY 3 Units Typography explores the art, process, and technical approach to ideating and producing successful typography for visual communication and design. Students use vector based tools to create, modify, place and design compositions using typography as an essential design element. Strongly Recommended: DIGM 41 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) DIGM 6A PHOTOSHOP 3 Units Introduction to the use of Adobe Photoshop for retouching, editing, and compositing digital images. Students contrast, exposure, color balance, to create enhanced compositions. May not receive credit if PHOT 6A or PHOT 66 have been successfully completed. Strongly Recommended: PHOT 1A (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) DIGM 10A INTRODUCTION TO ANIMATION 3 Units Students explore animation principles using analog media, including, phonotropes, stop motion animation, claymation and flip books. Digital aspects of animation are also explored to create short mini animation sequences. Strongly Recommended: DIGM 11 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) DIGM 11 VIDEO EDITING 3 Units Introduction to the art of digital video editing using industry standard software. Students explore the theory and practice of various editing styles in order to gain a better understanding of how stories are constructed in the editing room. DIGM 14 3D MODELING & ANIMATION 3 Units 3D Animation includes the fundamentals of 3D modeling; including materials, textures, and surfacing, as well as lighting and scene creation. Students also animate simple objects and characters using animation software. Strongly Recommended: DIGM 10A (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) DIGM 15 WEB DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS 3 Units Introduction to the design elements required to create a visually compelling website or user experience. Emphasis on design and layout, vector based graphics, and style consistency. Students learn to create a style guide to ensure continuity of design throughout the build process. Strongly Recommended: DIGM 2 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT The earliest years of life are critical to building a foundation for lifelong learning. Young children need settings in which they can learn and explore in a nurturing and educationally rich environment, with teachers who understand how to foster their social, emotional and cognitive development. Course offerings in Chabot‘s ECD program align closely with Community Care Licensing regulations and the requirements for the Child Development Permit granted by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. ECD 31 PERFORMING ARTS: PRSCHL FNDTNS 1 Unit Introduction to the performing arts domain of the California Preschool Learning Foundations and Frameworks including strands of music, drama, and dance. Provides practical strategies for implementing the curriculum frameworks developed for this domain. Applicable to required or professional development units for Child Development Permit holders, pre-school, transitional kindergarten, and early- primary teachers. ECD 36 VISUAL ARTS: PRESCH FOUND 1 Unit Introduction to the visual arts domain of the California Preschool Learning Foundations and Frameworks including artistic expression and response, and skills using various art mediums. Provides practical strategies for implementing the curriculum frameworks developed for this domain. Applicable to required or professional development units for Child Development Permit holders, pre-school, transitional kindergarten, and early-primary teachers. ECD 50 ECD PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES 3 Units Explores the typical roles and expectations of early childhood educators emphasizing the key role of relationships, constructive adult-child interactions. Identifies professional ethics, career pathways, and professional standards. Introduces best practices for developmentally appropriate learning environments, curriculum, and effective pedagogy for young children including how play contributes to children’s learning, growth, and development. ECD 52 CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENCE 3 Units Concentrating on the portions of the lifespan from middle childhood continuing through adolescence and addressing both typical and atypical children’s progress across all developmental domains. ECD 54 CHILD HEALTH/SAFETY/NUTRITION 3 Units Course covers the regulations, standards, policies, procedures, and best practices related to health, safety, and nutrition in care and education settings for children birth through middle childhood. Includes the teacher’s role in prevention strategies, first aid, emergency preparedness, infectious illnesses, nutrition and meal planning. ECD 56 CHILD GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT 3 Units Examines the progression of development in the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional domains and identifies developmental milestones for children both typical and atypical from conception through adolescence. ECD 59 LITERACY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD 3 Units Learn about language and literacy development improving teachers’ knowledge of early literacy development in children from infancy to school age. We will discuss the how to support language development, prompt a love of books and build pre-literacy skills in a play-based setting. The student will develop knowledge and understanding of the normal development of language and literacy in young children, including multi-language learners. Explore the teacher’s role in fostering and facilitating emergent literacy by reading books, storytelling, story writing, and using puppets, flannel boards and props. Acquire skills and strategies to help children develop phonemic and phonological awareness, learn to decode. Strongly Recommended: ECD 56. ECD 60 YOUNG CHILD/EXCEPTIONAL NEEDS 3 Units Introduces the variations in development of infants and children with exceptional needs and the resulting impact on families. Includes an overview of historical and societal influences, laws relating to children with exceptional needs, and the identification and referral process. Assessments, interventions, and learning environments for infants and children with exceptional needs. Prerequisite: ECD 56 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher). ECD 62 CHILD, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY 3 Units Explores the role of collaboration between family, community, and schools in supporting children’s development, birth through adolescence. ECD 63 EARLY CHILDHOOD CURRICULUM 4 Units Students in a supervised lab setting will plan learning experiences in all content areas based on developmentally appropriate practices and learning theories which support children’s physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and creative needs birth to age eight within a play based, inclusive and cultural setting.
