The student will learn about the “how to” of real estate and what a successful real estate agent does to thrive in the competitive and potentially lucrative residential real estate industry. If you are interested in learning about all the activities involved in working in the real estate field in an effort to see if this industry is right for you, this is a helpful class. Strongly Recommended: REST 80. REST 88 REAL ESTATE PROPERTY MANAGEMENT 3 Units This course provides an interesting overview of real estate property management and demonstrates how every property has a property manager, seen or unseen. There are extensive career opportunities in property management in many areas and different property types. In this class, the different types of property management areas are explored including: residential multi-family apartments commercial retail shopping center properties office properties industrial properties Special use properties (churches, schools, resorts) If you are interested in learning about real estate property management as a career option or for your own property management purposes, this class is an excellent choice to gain that knowledge. REST 90 EXAM PREPARATION: CA LICENSING 2 Units Real and personal property acquisition, ownership, estates in real property, joint tenancies, partnerships, sales contracts, homesteads, deeds and taxes. Methods of financing, real estate practices, and regulation of the real estate business. RELIGIOUS STUDIES Explore the many religions of the world from the aspect of philosophy, history, interpretation and present viewpoints. Some courses can be taken to fulfill various General Education Requirements, or carry transfer credit and can prepare you for transferring to earn a four-year degree in applicable majors. RELS 50 RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD 3 Units Introduction to the study of religion by (1) surveying the world religions, stating basic principles of each as shown by fundamental scriptures, practices and works of art, highlighting underlying patterns, OR (2) exploring themes and concepts, using the world religions as examples. Themes may include: grace, sin, enlightenment, suffering, salvation. SERVICE LEARNING SERV 85A LEARNING IN ACTION: BEGINNING 1 Unit Placement in meaningful volunteer projects in community organizations or schools, approved by instructor and supervised by site supervisor. Class will meet one hour per week on campus for reflection and discussion of community issues, and students will serve at least 3 hours per week in community agencies or schools. SIGN LANGUAGE American Sign Language is the main sign language in the United States, and the main sign language for many deaf communities in the US. The courses in the ASL program at Chabot college will teach you communication skills through the language of sign. The courses also develop students’ understanding of deafness and deaf culture. The program will prepare you to use ASL for your personal or career needs, whether you are a deafened adult, want to communicate with family or friends who are deaf, want to work as an interpreter or bilingual speaker, or just want to learn a new language! Most ASL courses are CSU and UC transferable. SL 64 ASL BEGINNING SIGN LANGUAGE 3 Units Introduction to beginning communication skills through the language of sign, with emphasis on American Sign Language (ASL). Introduction to an understanding of deafness and the deaf culture. Basic sign vocabulary, the manual alphabet, and a contrast with various other sign systems used throughout the United States. SL 65 ASL INTERMEDIATE SIGN LANGUAGE 3 Units Further development of skills and knowledge learned in Beginning Sign Language 64, with emphasis on American Sign Language (ASL). Communication of vocabulary building, with emphasis on applying ASL characteristics for communication in phrases and culturally specific language. Prerequisite: Sign Language 64 (completed with a grade of C or higher). SL 66 ADVANCED SIGN LANGUAGE 3 Units Further development of American Sign Language (ASL) receptive/ expressive skills and knowledge learned in Sign Language 65. Emphasis on conversational skills in functional situations, continued vocabulary expansion and knowledge of Deaf culture and the Deaf community. Prerequisite: Sign Language 65 (completed with a grade of C or higher). SL 67 ADVANCED II AMERICAN SIGN LANG 3 Units Further development of American Sign Language (ASL) receptive/ expressive skills and knowledge learned in Sign Language 66. Emphasis on conversational skills in functional situations, continued vocabulary expansion and knowledge of Deaf culture and the Deaf community. Prerequisite: SL 66 (completed with a grade of “C” or higher) SOCIOLOGY We seek to foster in students and understanding of the range and complexity of human societies and social structures, and the methods that have been used to study human society. We also seek to inspire a value for diversity, and to prepare students for successful transfer. Sociology studies human interaction and society with emphasis on the impact of culture and social institutions on human behavior. In particular, sociology students learn how race, class, gender, and sexuality shape our everyday lives. The Chabot Sociology department serves hundreds of students who are academically and culturally diverse. A large number of Chabot students take sociology courses to fulfill their General Education requirements, to transfer, or for personal enrichment. The department also offers an AA-T degree in Sociology. SOCI 1 PRINCIPLES OF SOCIOLOGY 3 Units An introduction to the study of sociology which includes an examination of major theories, research methodology, culture, socialization, deviance, social class, race, gender, and social change. SOCI 2 SOCIAL PROBLEMS 3 Units Introduction and analysis of contemporary social problems from a sociological perspective. Focus on modern American society. Strongly Recommended: SOCI 1 SOCI 3 INTRODUCTION TO RACE & ETHNIC RELATIONS 3 Units Analysis of racial and ethnic relations in the United States from a sociological perspective.
