2 East Side Adult Education - Fall 2022 East Side Adult Education Program is a public education program for adults funded by the State and Federal funds schools offer free classes for adults 18 and older. Students may obtain a high school diploma, a high school equivalency diploma (GED/HiSET), prepare for a career by enrolling in one of our Career Technical Education courses, learn to speak English, and learn how to become a U.S. citizen. http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 3 Class Location & Information HOW TO REGISTER Students interested in attending classes at East Side Adult Education Program must register to take a placement test. Classes are open to all adults 18 years old and over. HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA AND GED Students interested in enrolling in one of the above programs must call and/ or come to our office in person to make a placement test appointment. After students have taken the placement test, they need to make a counseling appointment. Based on their placement test assessments, students will be assigned to class(es). Students who are currently enrolled in one of our district high schools may register for classes to recover credit to satisfy high school diploma requirements . High school students must meet with their counselor and obtain permission from their parents/guardians prior to being accepted at adult school. ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)/CITIZENSHIP Please visit the adult school you wish to attend. You will take a placement test at the time of your registration. This inital placement will determine your language development level. Students who pass the inital placement test, will register to take an additional English language assessment. Our ESL program operates on an open enrollment basis, students may enroll throughout the semester. CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION Students interested in enrolling in CTE courses may either call and/or come to our office in person to enroll.

4 East Side Adult Education - Fall 2022 Adult Basic Education The Adult Basic Education Program (ABE) provides open enrollment classes, aligned with the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), in Mathematics, Language Arts (language, speaking, listening, and writing) and Reading. The integration of the CCR standards in the ABE program is intended to provide students with the knowledge and foundational skills for students to transition to the adult secondary program. This program is also designed for students who are native speakers of English and immigrant students who possess advanced communication skills in English and need to further develop their literacy, numeracy skills, and communication skills. All works, or projects, are based on two core concepts: The Design Cycle which is the basis of the creative process: (1) research, (2) plan, (3) create and (4) evaluate. The Elements of Art--line, shape, form, texture, color, space, and value--which are the basic components in an art piece. Students will learn basic instruction and skills building in painting, drawing, and design using traditional media such as acrylic paints, charcoal, watercolor, and colored pencils, as well as 21st Century technology. http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 5 High School Diploma The East Side Adult Education Program is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) to grant high school diplomas. The High School Diploma Program is open to adults 18 years or older. Over fifty high school classes are offered during the day and evening. Students must meet all state and local requirements for graduation. Residency for high school graduation requires that a student must be enrolled and pass 10 units of credit at the East Side Adult Education program. This is a two-day program and if you sign up for morning and afternoon sections, you will have more study time to accelerate your progress. This is optional! We meet for a Zoom Lesson class either Tuesday morning or Thursday afternoon. This gives you the freedom to decide which works best for you. The rest of your time is working with assignments to help in skill building, studying from our software program (AZTEC), and conferencing with your teacher for tutoring and/or small group instruction. Study Rooms are set up for you to accomplish everything needed to reach your goal. AZTEC is an online study tool that will guide and provide you with Pretests and Posttests, Practice tests, drills, and lessons. Your instructor will oversee your lessons and contribute to the enhancement of those areas that require more practice. Through testing and assessment, the teacher and student discuss the student’s readiness for official testing. Getting Started: Students will be required to take a Placement Test Monday through Thursdays at Independence Adult Center, 625 Educational Park Drive, San Jose, CA 95133. Please call (408) 928-9300 to schedule an appointment with a counselor and to take a Placement Test to determine your level of learning. Once accepted into the GED Remote Learning Program, students will be contacted by the On-line Instructor and sent the Student Agenda, Registration form, plus other instructions. This will help students with the process of “getting started.” Class is Free and so are Resources!

http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 7 HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY TEST PREPARATION High School Equivalency Test Preparation Program is “self-paced” and “self– contained.” Class is open-entry/open-exit throughout the semester. Students must be 18 years or older. Each student has an individualized educational plan to complete his/her personal requirements. PROGRAMA DE GED/HISET EN ESPAÑOL Los cursos gratuitos de GED/HiSET son personalizados e incluyen instrucción integrada. It is California’s Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) Program and provides temporary cash aid and assistance in finding and keeping a job. A major goal of the program is to transition CalWORKs recipients to employment and eventual selfsufficiency through upward mobility. When receiving CalWORKs cash aid, the family also receives Medi-Cal and may be eligible for Food Stamp benefits. http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 9 English as a Second Language ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE East Side Adult Education offers more than 60 English as a Second Language classes accommodating the different language proficiency levels of individual students. Classes are offered in the mornings, afternoons and evenings. For all ESL classes students can register at any time during the school year by visiting the school of their preference. Students are placed in classes according to their placement test results and space availability. http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 11 ESL CLASS SCHEDULE AND LOCATIONS ESL DISTANCE LEARNING An alternative way of enrolling in ESL is offered through our Distance Learning Program. ESL Distance Learning is a method of studying in which much of the work is done online with weekly meetings with the teacher. The ESL Distance Learning class will include: • A 3 hour orientation for the students with the teacher • A meeting once a week after the orientation with the teacher and classmates • Corresponding between the teacher and the student over the internet using an English as Second Language software program. Requirements: • Students must test at an English language proficiency level of (Low/ High Intermediate or Advanced Low.) • Student attends the 3 hour orientation • Student attends scheduled meetings with their teacher at least once a week. • Student has access to a laptop/desktop and internet to participate in the Distance Learning Class. ESL Class Schedule and Locations ADDITIONAL COURSE OFFERINGS ESL Conversation Class: This class will provide students with the opportunity to practice listening and speaking skills, the proper use of English grammar, vocabulary development, and practice in pronunciation. Students will discuss topics related to personal interests and current events. The class is open to students from high beginner to intermediate levels. ESL Academic Writing: will focus on developing students’ writing skills using strategies for reading and responding in writing to relevant topics. Students will practice various writing styles, express ideas, build their English vocabulary and grammar usage. By the end of the class students will be able to draft, revise and edit paragraphs, short essays and an autobiographical description. These classes are for applicants who wish to become a citizen, prepare for the interview, and pass the citizenship test. ESL CITIZENSHIP STUDENTS WILL: • Learn how to complete application forms • Read, write, and learn more about U.S. History • Practice answering the citizenship test questions as well as the interview questions • Use online resources to study citizenship • Practice listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. 14 East Side Adult Education - Fall 2022 Career Education WORK READINESS This course introduces students to the working world, and provides the knowledge and insight necessary to compete in today’s challenging job market. This relevant and timely course helps students investigate careers as they apply to personal interests and abilities, develop skills and job search documents needed to enter the workforce, explore the rights of workers and traits of effective employees, and address the importance of professionalism and responsibility as careers change and evolve. This two-semester course includes lessons in which students creae a self-assessment profile, and a resume that can be used in their educational or career portfolio. Online License required MEDICAL ASSISTANT FUNDAMENTALS In theMedical Assistant Fundamentals course, students learn the five steps of the nursing process, basic anatomy and physiology, how to interact with patients and team members, problem-solving techniques, stress management, and verbal and nonverbal communication techniques. The online resources for the class are user-friendly, even for first-timers. The lessons will familiarize you with medical terms and forms commonly used in a medical office. Students taking this course will greatly enhance their employment value. All students are encouraged to enroll in the fundamentals class at the same time as one of the medical courses listed below. This course will provide an overview of the nature, organization, and function of healthcare administrative services. Students have the opportunity to learn the practical application of leadership, communication, team building, decision-making, problem solving, as well as conflict resolution and negotiation. Students also have the opportunity to experience volunteer work in the field. http://adulteducation.esuhsd.org/ 15 CAREER EDUCATION MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY A & B DISTANCE LEARNING If you are planning to enter the medical field, this course is for you. Medical terminology (MT) is the language used by healthcare professionals and organizations. You will learn Greek/Latin prefixes and suffixes that will help you master many medical terms. The course consists of two components (A/B) which each take a semester to complete, but if you are highly motivated to become proficient in MT, you can complete both courses in one semester. Instructor Office Hours: Wednesdays 6:00 pm - 9:10 pm MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY A & B DISTANCE LEARNING Jobs related to health are among the most plentiful and lucrative ones. If you are interested in a career in the medical field or would like to learn more about it, you should enroll in this course. After completing this course, you will be knowledgeable about health science careers, health science courses and programs, the history of health care, the impact of modern research on the health science industry, and careers in diagnostics, therapeutic care, and biotechnology. At the same time, you will learn about computer concepts such as Cloud Computing and the internet. You will learn how to effectively use technology and internet resources as you develop teamwork, communication and presentation skills in a variety of formats. At the end of the semester you will have your own website and be able to demonstrate your skills in what is commonly known as Google Suite. A set of intelligent Google apps including Gmail, Docs, Drive and Calendar to connect you to the people in your business or personal life.
